Imphal, April 29, 2017 (DIPR): Shri Th. Shyamkumar, Minister MAHUD, Town Planning, Forest & Environment, Horticulture and Soil Conservation today laid the foundation stone for the Khurai Lamlong Keithel (market place) at Lamlong Bazar. Attending the function as the Chief Guest of the function, Th. Shyamkumar said that, numerous discussions were held in the past with senior politicians regarding construction of a modern market place at Lamlong. The Minister gave assurance that the new government under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri N. Biren Singh is determined to construct a modern market place. He said that, once the construction is completed, the new Lamlong Keithel will be a source of livelihood for people not only in Imphal East but also for those coming from far flung areas including Hilly areas.

Stating that the Lamlong Keithel is historically famous for being the market place to actively trade in paddy, Minister Shyamkumar assured that a foot bridge will be constructed for easy accessibility. He said that, foot bridges will be also built in other market places as well. He said that, the new government will give modern facilities to the new Khurai Lamlong Keithel and appealed to the public for full cooperation to the government. The Minister said that, the funding will be provided by State and the Centre in the ratio of 10:90.

Shri L. Sushindro Meitei, Parliamentary Secretary (Home) who is also the MLA of Khurai A/C said that, people should not forget the initiatives undertaken by the new government and appealed for full public cooperation. He also said that, he will appeal to the government to provide space in the new market for the women vendors coming from Hill areas and from other far flung areas. He also appealed to the government to provide alternatives in the new market building so that the market vendors can take shelter during emergencies like bandh and blockade.

L. Sushindro Meitei appealed to the people to make the new market place a symbol of integrity and brotherhood which will be an example of unity among different communities. Vendors will be given a loan of Rs 20,000 each in collaboration with Bandhan Bank and appealed to the vendors to repay the loan on time, he added.

Coordinating Body Khurai and Apex Body of local clubs, meira paibis and working class submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minster through the Chief Guest of the function for setting up of smart villages in Ekou, Yengkhuman, Guwaltapi and Itham villages of Imphal East District.

Lamlong Keithel Phambi Apunba Lup and tribal street vendors presented gifts to the dignitaries attending the function organised by MAHUD, Manipur and Lamlong Keithel Development Committee. The function was attended by PDA Chairman, T. Robindro; N. Indrajit Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, MAHUD, Manipur and people of the constituency. (DIPR)
